Could Mariah Carey’s New Album Flop?

MimiStarPulse

Years ago, the notion that one of today’s most gifted, preeminent artists could release an album that could potentially “flop” would have been laughable – absurd. However, as R&B/pop diva Mariah Carey continually prolonged her long-awaited follow-up to the underperforming, oddly titled Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel, one has to wonder if the album even has a shot. That’s not throwing shade towards Carey or diminishing her immense musical gifts, but several factors make a once surefire bet a potential big-time underdog.

Delayed albums have a history of underwhelming sales. Honestly, this notion shouldn’t be that unreasonable or shocking. If an album continues to be pushed back or several singles have been released with none catching on, it is a good indication or at least the perception that the product is struggling. Sure, the respective artist is still releasing their next studio album, but the grandeur and excitement about the product falls-off with failed promotional opportunities. 50 Cent certainly didn’t benefit from the delays with Before I Self Destruct, which featured numerous delays beginning in 2007 (saw the light of day in 2009) and was barely gold-hit for the multiplatinum rapper. R. Kelly also didn’t benefit from scrapping 12 Play: 4th Quarter in 2008. The resulting album Untitled arrived with little fanfare and definitely began the waning of Kelly’s album sales in general. With so many singles released with lukewarm reception, the questions certainly arise about the success of Carey’s upcoming Me. I Am Mariah… The Elusive Chanteuse.

The release date for Me has been set for May 27, 2014, according to a recent Billboard article. The problem with a release date so soon (despite delays) is there is no hit single to promote the album, which is a problem. “#Beautiful” does appear on the album, but its promotional power has long ceased. “The Art of Letting Go” was right up my alley, but the deluxe edition track wasn’t potent enough to be the game changer that a forty something Carey needs at this point. The performance of “You’re Mine (Eternal)” is horrific by Carey standards, making this journalist wonder if Mimi is about to be extremely devastated when her album sales numbers come out. I wish her the best – she deserves that given her prodigious talent – but I fear for my girl.

Why Mariah Carey’s New Album Title Isn’t as Egomaniacal as You Might Think

self-potraitYahoo!

They always say not to judge a book by its cover, but in the case of Mariah Carey’s new album, it’s okay to judge it by its back cover. As promised last week, the 44-year-old pop diva has unveiled the title, key art, and track listing for her 14th studio album, but it was a drawing on the back cover that really tells the story.

Initial fan reaction was mixed, arguing that the images of Mariah on the album’s two different front covers look retouched to the extreme, and the title – “I Am Mariah… The Elusive Chanteuse” – is rooted in a seemingly ego-driven declaration of self-identity.

Moreover, the track listing on the back cover features a child’s handwritten drawing, leading some to wonder if Mariah let her kids choose the album’s theme. Those fans might want to look a little closer. Mariah told Billboard that her new album would “take its name from a personal possession of mine that’s part of an entity that I’ve had almost all my life”. And sure enough, the album title’s meaning was explained in a YouTube video Mariah posted along with Thursday morning’s announcement.

“On the back cover of this album is a personal treasure,” Mariah begins. “My first and only self-portrait. I drew it when I was 3 and a half, and entitled it ‘Me. I Am Mariah’. Please don’t judge me for such a simplistic title. C’mon, I was only 3 and a half! It was a creative visualization of how I saw myself with the purity of a child’s heart before it was ever broken. I’ve kept this drawing private for so long but because this album is a reflection of the peaks and valleys that have made me who I am today, I’ve decided to share it with those of you who actually care and have been here for me through it all. We’ve been through a lot, but I’ve always known me. I Am Mariah.”

She continues, “Along the way, there have been many nicknames and I’ve inadvertently embodied many personas. Lately, they’ve been calling me… The Elusive Chanteuse.” In other words, the album title is a combination of how Mariah first envisioned herself as a child, along with a recent name given to her by those closest to her. Mariah’s other popular nicknames over the years have included “Mimi” and “MC”.

All of this falls in line with what Mariah’s echoed many times in recent years; that her next album would be a reflection of how motherhood has changed her. The inevitable Beyonce comparisons continue beyond the album’s “surprise” rollout strategy. First, Mariah’s album title has vague similarities to Queen Bey’s 2008 album, “I Am… Sasha Fierce”. Also, Mariah chose to feature her brood on one of her latest songs. Track 9, “Supernatural,” is credited “with special guest stars ‘Dembabies’ a.k.a. Ms. Monroe & Mr. Moroccan, Scott Cannaon, a.k.a. Roc N’ Roe”; Beyonce featured daughter Blue Ivy on the track “Blue” on her latest self-titled visual album.

Many of Mariah’s albums over the years have looked somewhat similar, and this one is no exception. Mariah mostly offers up variations on her two signature album cover looks: a full body shot centered in the album’s middle, or a close up face shot. Sure enough, on “I Am Mariah… The Elusive Chanteuse”, she offers one of each – the full-body centered image on the 15-track Standard Edition, and the close-up on the 18-track Deluxe Edition.

The Deluxe Edition of “I Am Mariah… The Elusive Chanteuse” features additional tracks that include “It’s a Wrap” (feat. Mary J. Blige) and “Betcha Gon’ Know” (feat. R. Kelly) – both of which were originally featured on her 2009 album “Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel” – and the previously released “The Art of Letting Go”.

Other collaborations on Mariah’s new album include “Dedicated” (feat. Nas), the also previously released “#Beautiful” (feat. Miguel), “You Don’t Know What To Do” (feat. Wale), and “Money ($ * / …)” (feat. Fabolous). “I Am Mariah… The Elusive Chanteuse” is available May 27.

The full track listing is below:

1. Cry.

Mariah Carey Announces 14th Album, ‘Me. I Am Mariah…The Elusive Chanteuse’

MeIAmMariahBillboard

Mariah Carey has unveiled the title, cover, release date and tracklist for her 14th album, “Me. I Am Mariah…The Elusive Chanteuse,” which arrives at digital and physical retail on May 27.

Carey, who appears on the cover of this week’s magazine, told Billboard that the album took its title from a “personal possession of mine that’s part of an entity that I’ve had almost all my life.”

And as she explains in a YouTube clip announcing the project, it’s based on her “first and only self-portrait,” which is featured on the album’s back cover and drawn when she was a child. “Please don’t judge me for such a simplistic title. Come on, I was only three and a half,” Carey says with a chuckle in the clip.

As for the second half of the album’s title, “The Elusive Chanteuse,” Carey says that’s a nickname she’s adopted recently, following other personas and nicknames like “Mimi” and “MC.”

As Billboard confirmed this week, the album features production from Rodney Jerkins, Jermaine Dupri, Hit-Boy and Mike Will Made It as well as guest appearances from Nas, Wale and Miguel. Additional features, confirmed by the album’s official tracklisting, include Fabolous, Carey’s twins Moroccan and Monroe (who turned 3 on April 30, the night of the album’s announcement). The deluxe edition also features a pair of duets, with R. Kelly and Mary J. Blige, on what appear to be outtakes from a planned 2010 remix album for her last album, “Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel,” as both songs (“Betcha Gon’ Know” with Kelly, “It’s A Wrap” with Blige) originally appeared on “Memoirs.”

The album will finally arrive after several shifts in strategy and missed release dates, most recently May 6. Her current single, “You’re Mine (Eternal),” spent one week on the Hot 100 in February and has sold 56,000 copies, according to Nielsen SoundScan. It also becomes her 17th No. 1 on Billboard’s Dance Club chart this week.

Arsip 2004: Menjadikan Kembali Mariah Carey Sebagai Artis

KapanLagi

Hasilnya Island Record setidaknya mendapatkan tambahan sekitar US$6 juta lebih.

Dia hot.” (thw/erl)
