Mariah Carey shines on the Gold Coast

The Age

Powerhouse performer Mariah Carey didn’t disappoint her massive loyal fan base at her first Australian concert on Tuesday night at The Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre by opening her anticipated show with her theme song Can’t Take That Away.

The diva, who is here for a series of three concerts, opened her performance in a figure hugging white spangly mini-dress and immediately set the tone with her multi-octave voice. “Happy New Year,” she yelled to the adoring 4502 pumped concert goers – who she affectionately calls her “lambs”.

She recalled an earlier visit to Australia before singing her hit song Butterfly on a white chaise lounge. “I had the best time in my life here the last time I was here, the dolphins even the Vegemite I had the best time it was like a freeing time in my life – I’m not just saying that.”

With her trademark flamboyance she brought her two children Moroccan and Monroe (dressed in a matching tutu) onto the stage with husband Nick Cannon and made them say “hi” in the microphone. “It’s bed time night night – I love you, kiss mummy,” she said trying to deal with minor sound difficulties in the newly built theatre.

The audience, including local celebrities Sophie Monk and Ruby Rose, were lucky enough to secure tickets which had sold out in minutes upon release. “Everything that happened last year that wasn’t exactly stellar – this year is going to be a long slow wonder!” she said. “What we need to do this year – for anything you don’t want to remember from the last year – listen to these tracks to shake it off,” she said as she broke into Shake It Off from her album The Emancipation of Mimi.

Here with her family, Carey arrived on The Gold Coast on Friday night on a private jet from Aspen, and has been staying in the penthouse suite of the filled-to -capacity Jupiters Hotel and Casino. Since arriving, the American Idol judge has been spotted enjoying Broadbeach with her family on one of Bruce Nicholl’s yachts as well as partaking in a beachside workout with her husband and trainer.

“G’day Gold Coast! So excited to be back in Australia, I can’t wait to see you all at the shows,” she tweeted on arrival. On Saturday night the couple tucked their twins in bed and enjoyed a dinner at the Sea Temple’s Seaduction Restaurant in Broadbeach with Fellow American Idol judge and her manager Randy Jackson, where she is reported to have dined on grade nine Wagyu beef prepared by executive chef Steve Szabo.

The singer is reported to have taken such a shine to the glittery strip on The Gold Coast, where she also plans on taking a swim with the dolphins at Sea World, that she is leaving Roe and Roc as they are affectionately called here with minders while she performs her Sydney concert on January 3rd and Melbourne date on the 5th.

Her world famous reputation appears in her backstage rider which stipulates two dozen white roses and vanilla-scented aromatherapy candles as well as a room temperature of exactly 75 degrees Fahrenheit. The list of demands is also reported to include Cristal champagne, a box of bendy straws and one special attendant to dispose of used chewing gum, tea service for eight people and two air purifier – and to make sure she only sees herself in the best light, no harsh lighting.

Mind you, Jupiters have it easy – if rumours of a reported London concert demand list are to be believed. Apparently Carey demanded a Rolls Royce Phantom, a pink carpet, a pink podium, confetti shaped as butterflies and 80 security guards several years ago. At the same concert she also asked for 20 white kittens and 100 doves – the request was turned down.

But there were no such antics this week with the singer and her entourage nothing short of “lovely” according to insiders and staff dealing with the superstar. The happy family have been out and about relaxed and posing with fans, although the singer did not make time for local media as planned ahead of her first gig, opting so stay in her suite. Her dancers were, however, been spotted out and about enjoying the pool side facilities and local fauna.

The singer has had a controversial year being embroiled in a battle with her fellow Idol judge Nicky Minaj but showed no tensions on Tuesday night. The opening acts for the show was husband Cannon and Australian singer, Anthony Callea, who has now performed with the holy triumvirate of divas – having opened for both Celine Dion and the late Whitney Houston.

“It’s the diva trifecta” he said ahead of his performance on Tuesday – when he flew up with partner Tim Campbell. “I met Whitney, I met Celine – to meet Mariah? Oh my God, I will be hoping and praying and everything in between.”

Mariah Carey touches down in Australia’s Gold Coast

Fresh from her Christmas getaway in Aspen, Colorado, Mariah Carey flew via private jet to Gold Coast Queensland, Australia today (December 28). The “Emotions” singer was joined by her husband Nick Cannon and their twins Monroe and Moroccan as she stepped off the plane at the Coolangatta Airport ahead of some tour dates in Sydney and Melbourne.

Mariah Carey and Her Little Lambs

The Telegraph

Mariah Carey has thanked her Aussie “lambs” for waiting 15 years to see her perform on local soil. Speaking exclusively to Insider ahead of her tour here next week, the American singing superstar says she is looking forward to bringing husband Nick Cannon and their children Down Under.

“Darling, I plan to give my lambs in Australia my all so we can share in the experience together,” Carey says, referring to her loyal fan base, just as Lady Gaga calls her followers “little monsters”. Carey last visited Australia in 1998 when she brought her Butterfly world tour here, featuring a cameo from Olivia Newton-John for a duet of Hopelessly Devoted To You.

“It is really hard to make sure I see all of my fans around the world,” she says. “It has been a case of waiting for the right time to make the trip.” Carey says she’s enjoyed strong support from Australian fans during more than 20 years in the business.

“I have been so lucky with my career and my fans are really diverse, ranging from those that have stuck by me right from the beginning to my new fans who have joined along the way,” she says. “I have the best fans in the world and they know that’s how I feel. My fans and I have an incredibly strong connection. Since the beginning they have named themselves the lambs, it was just something I used to say to them.”

Carey, 42, holds multiple world records and is regarded as one of the top-selling female artists of all time. Since breaking onto the scene with her self-titled debut album in 1990, she’s enjoyed hit after hit with songs including Emotions, Dream Lover, I’ll Be There, Hero and Fantasy.

Carey has notched up sales of more than 200 million and amassed an awards collection that includes five Grammys, 17 World Music Awards and 31 Billboard Music Awards. “There are so many women who helped pioneer the music business for all of us,” she says when asked of her inspirations. “Really, there’s too many to name. For example, Aretha Franklin, Barbra Streisand, Diana Ross, Patti LaBelle and Chaka Khan.”

Carey finds it equally hard to pinpoint a favourite song. “I don’t have one,” she says. “My taste in music is so diverse it varies from day to day. Music has always been my saving grace and there are so many songs that have been the soundtrack to my life.”

Carey’s husband will perform DJ sets across the country marking the first time the couple will perform on the same bill together. Anthony Callea and Andrew De Silva will also perform support slots. The tour starts at Jupiters on the Gold Coast on January 1 and heads to Sydney’s Allphones Arena two days later. Both shows are sold out with a limited number of tickets released last week for her gig at Melbourne’s Etihad Stadium on January 5.

“I remember what a beautiful country Australia is and what incredible fans I have there,” she says of her last visit here. “The absolute highlight of the trip was swimming with dolphins in Perth. They are so beautiful and that experience really stayed with me.”

Carey and Cannon, 32, were married in the Bahamas in 2008. Their one-year-old twins, Monroe, a girl, and Moroccan, a boy, will travel with the couple and Carey is anxious to make sure they get to see some of the local tourist sites, as well as our unique flora and fauna. “Of course I’ll be with Nick and the babies, it is the holidays,” she says. “I really want my babies to see the kangaroos, the koalas and the dolphins.”

Carey recently signed on to the judging panel of American Idol alongside Keith Urban, Nicki Minaj and Randy Jackson. “The most important thing to me is being able to work with some deserving contestants,” she says of the new gig. “There are so many that are truly talented and I’m really excited to be a part of helping them realise their dreams.”

Mariah Carey plays Sydney’s Allphones Arena on January 3.

Mariah Carey singing in Aspen – a winter wonderland

Singer Mariah Carey gives a smile as she goes out to shop at the Gucci store in Aspen wearing some sparkling jewelry. It looks like Mariah may also be getting ready for some Christmas Carols, luminarias to fill the street and some good hot apple cider.

I think I would freak out if I celebrated Christmas and un-expectedly Mariah Carey showed up singing carols at my house. How amazing would that be?

Inside Mariah Carey’s Christmas

Mail Online

Mariah Carey is unashamedly Christmas mad. And as she makes her final preparations for the big day the singer has give fans an insight into her family celebrations. The singer tweeted a series of intimate pictures of her family at play.

Mariah posted an adorable picture of herself planting a big kiss on the cheek of her daughter Monroe. Monroe and her twin brother Moroccan are 20 months old and often referred to by the American Idol judge, who is married to TV presenter Nick Cannon, as “dem babies”.

The tot wore a cute pair of pink glasses and her loving mother besottedly kissed her. Mariah also shared an amusing picture of her 32-year-old husband prancing round in his new lamb slippers. The joke-loving star seemed to be dancing to his own beat in a red hoodie, jogging bottoms and oversize headphones.

Mariah is the epitome of Christmas for many because of her iconic hit single – so it’s no surprising the somewhat over the top singer has thrown herself into the festive season at full throttle. The super diva and her family will be spending the holiday in the exclusive ski resort of Aspen in Colorado.

There the 42-year-old was seen browsing in a Gucci store on Thursday before paying a friend’s nearby jewellery shop a visit. The All I Want For Christmas Is You hit maker happily stopped to talk to fans and pose for pictures and seemed thrilled to have been spotted shopping.

The mother-of-twins wore a cosy fur-lined gilet and sprayed on jeans that could barely contain her mega curves. Towering wedged suede ankle boots gave Mariah a bit of lift and she also had some quite serious bling on show. The multi Grammy Award winning singer’s hair was ironed super smooth and lashings of blusher gave her round cheeks a flirty glow.

Next stop was to see her longtime friend, designer Joan Boyce. Joan has been close to Mariah for years and if often mistaken for her mother.

Little Monroe plays dress-up with ropes of Mariah Carey’s pearls

Mail Online

Dress-up playtime is just different when you’re doing it in Mariah Carey’s closet. The 42-year-old pop star tweeted a picture of her daughter Monroe enveloped in ropes of pearls on Monday with the caption: “Ms Monroe seems to think sometimes pearls can be your best friends too.”

Aside from the he girly girl was dressed in an all-pink ensemble to match her adorable glasses, including a pink bow, pacifier, and pajamas. No word yet on whether little Monroe also likes to model her mother’s $12,000 nameplate necklace which was a post-birth gift from her husband of four years Nick Cannon. The four-carat diamond and sapphire necklace spelling out the twins’ names came from upscale jeweller Jason of Beverly Hills.

Wednesday night it was Moroccan’s turn and the doting mother-of-two posted a photo of the boy chilling with his legs comfortably spread out on a big bed. The notorious diva and the America’s Got Talent host frequently post pictures offering fans a candid glimpse into their posh home life with their 20-month-old fraternal twins.

The two privileged tykes – also known as Dem Babies – are often seen in designer duds playing on their parents’ grand piano, 1,000-thread count sheets, or taking a dip in their marble-tiled swimming pool. The Vision of Love crooner, whose net worth was estimated at more than $500 million last year, spares no expense when it comes to spoiling her cute toddlers.

At their lavish black-tie birthday party earlier this year, the tots were gifted a toy Ferrari, rocking horse, and miniature white piano while celebrating at the Plaza Athenee in Paris. Mariah also reportedly spent millions of dollars creating a luxurious nursery for her little ones, including Chelsea Sleigh cribs, Clara changing table, 24-carat gold and onyx sofa, diamond-encrusted iPods, and a flatscreen TV that comes down from the ceiling.

The Dreamlover hitmaker and her 32-year-old husband were inspired to name their son Moroccan after Nick proposed to her in a Moroccan-style room. His twin sister Monroe was named in honour of the iconic singer, Marilyn Monroe.

The Grammy winner with the five-octave vocal range has been hard at work filming her second season of American Idol, where she was spotted wearing two glamorous gowns last week. “I’m glad I didn’t do a show like this,” Carey told the Hollywood Reporter. “I would’ve hated it! I learned on stage how to perform and what I realized is the best advice for them is to just be themselves, because that’s what really sells now.”

Nicki, Mariah and Keith on their judging styles

American Idol has been filming Hollywood Week for season 12 over the past several days. Fortunately, the judges were able to take some time away to talk with reporters about how the season is progressing. And when talking to TV Guide, Mariah Carey, Nicki Minaj and Keith Urban described what they’re like as judges. Nicki says that she’s “kooky. Never a dull moment with my judging style. That’s for sure. I try to never plan what I’m going to say or how I’m going to feel. I just try to stay in the moment and allow some craziness to come. We can’t really sit there and be stiff and say the same things.” This sounds in line with what everyone’s expecting from her. And it’s what I’m looking forward to most – as long as she doesn’t turn into a Steven Tyler-like judge.

I’ve said before that Mariah is probably going to be like a nurturing mother to the contestants. And she says as much, but instead thinks of herself as a fairy godmother. “I try to speak as frank as possible, as kindly as possible – not like sugar-coating the whole thing because that does nobody any good. And I think it would be boring for people to watch. But I feel like my experience as a recording artist and a producer and a writer has helped me get to a point where I can sit there and say, ‘I’m not sure if you hit this part correctly’…” Some have worried that she’ll be like the other big diva stars on these singing competition shows past and present who don’t offer a whole lot of critique or substantive comments, so I hope what she says here comes across on TV come January.

When it comes to season 12, most of the focus has been on Mariah and Nicki. But what about Keith? He says, “I try to not absolutely destroy somebody in front of millions of people, but at the same time, if someone’s not really on, and everyone at home knows it, that’s the difficult part too. And for me, if any of the emotions are present – the joy, the vulnerability, the insecurity, the uncertainty, the anger, whatever it is – if I can feel that in them, I’m interested. Even if they’re a little bit out of tune.” Let’s hope he doesn’t disregard pitch entirely, because that’s still an extremely important element of what makes a strong performance.
